A personal message from Andrea Carradus

As many of you know, I made a job change in May of this year so that I could be closer to my son and also be more engaged in the issue of affordable housing in my local community. Even in the wealthy suburbs of Chicago, there are too many families who are struggling to support themselves and end up homeless because of an abusive relationship, a lost job, or an unexplained eviction. I was fortunate to find a position at Bridge Communities, and I love that my daily work supports the mission of transitioning homeless families to self-sufficiency by partnering with the community to provide mentoring, housing, and supportive services.

Each family is housed in an apartment owned by Bridge and is paired with mentors who meet with them every week for two years – two years! – to provide financial coaching and life-skills advice. Every adult has the opportunity to participate in one-on-one job counseling with our staff so they can get and retain the best job possible. And every child has the opportunity to participate in enrichment activities – like tutoring, field trips, summer reading programs, and art classes - that they might not normally be able to afford but that are so important in their growth and development…and just helping them feel like a kid!

On November 4th, I will be participating in my first Sleep Out Saturday, where hundreds of people around DuPage County will be sleeping outside to raise awareness about homelessness and to experience firsthand the difficulties of being homeless. My goal is to raise $1050, which is the amount needed to house a family for one month - $35 is the amount for one night. If you believe, like I do, that no child and no family should be homeless, please consider making a donation.

Thank you so much!
