A personal message from Lisa Doyle
This year, November 5 marks the third time I'll participate in Sleep Out Saturday. The first year, when the temperature dropped to 22 degrees, I slept inside a tent in my friend Debbie's backyard. I got a couple hours of fractured sleep and spent the rest of the day recovering at home.
The next year, I thought I'd be smarter about it, and opted to sleep inside my car at Naperville's Central Park. HA! It wasn't any warmer, and I was cramped and confined by the small spaces and seats in my Corolla. I dozed off for about 10 minutes around midnight, shivered for the next few hours, and then gave up any hope of more sleep around 4:30 AM.
The things I remember most about Sleep Out Saturday wasn't just the cold and discomfort--it's also the intense gratitude and relief that my family doesn't HAVE to sleep like this at night. We don't HAVE to feel sick with exhaustion the following day. We are safe and warm in the security of our home.
This safety, warmth and security is provided to 130+ DuPage County homeless families each year through Bridge Communities. When you support Bridge's Sleep Out Saturday event, you give families a safe home, employment coaching, mentoring, financial counseling, case management, community programming and more. You'll give them the opportunity to recover from the trauma of homelessness. And you'll give them the tools they need so that they'll never be homeless again.
Sleep Out Saturday has been one of the most challenging, difficult and meaningful experiences of my life the past two years, and I expect this year's event will be, too . Will you stand in solidarity with the homeless families served by Bridge Communities and support Sleep Out Saturday? Just $35 is enough to provide a family with safe housing for a night. Please consider making a gift to help give homeless families the opportunity for a better future. Thank you!
